BPG Sales Numbers: Q4 2012

Posted by Steve on January 10th, 2013 — in Square Deal

Following last quarter, the Q4 2012 sales numbers naturally look a little bad as they return to some sort of baseline. That’s deceiving, however, because the numbers are higher than any sales period previous to Q3.

Product Title Sales Last Q Sales This Q Prior Ongoing * New Ongoing *
Fiasco  4078  1736  8398  10134
Companion  1481  750  3471  4221
Grey Ranks  14  17  91  108
Roach  39  23  248  271
Roach Returns  19  3  75  78
Durance  770  470  770  1240
American Disasters  0  220  0  220

* “Ongoing” refers to the total sales since the beginning of Q1 2011, when this reporting began.

We sold a total of 3219 items this quarter, including 220 PDFs of our new Fiasco supplement American Disasters, released in mid-December. We’re particularly excited about this because it means that well-curated playsets and playtested rule hacks are worthwhile. It’s also our first PDF-only supplement, and we’re interested to see how that works out. Thanks to OneBookShelf’s new ventures into print-on-demand sales, it’s possible you’ll see AD (and other such supplements) revised and available for print in 2013.

As the year closes, we’ve sold a total of 12,584 books (print and digital) including 7794 copies of Fiasco. Of those, roughly 25% (2055 copies) of them were PDFs. Of the remaining 5739 print books, 87% of them were sold through to retailers through distribution or directly from BPG. Another 10% of the print books were sold to individual customers directly, either by us or IPR. The final 3% of the print books (about 188 copies) were sold at conventions.

For comparison, we sold a total of 2340 copies of Fiasco last year, with a higher percentage of PDFs (about 39%). Overall, we saw an increase of 133% in sales of the game, and slightly more for sales in general. As always, we’ve very grateful for your support. We’ll continue to do our best to earn it!

FAQ: Printing the Durance Surveyor Cards

Posted by Steve on November 5th, 2012 — in Square Deal

Durance has shipped and our Kickstarter backers are starting to get the books and cards in their hands. Lots of people seem to like the Surveyor cards, and have been asking about where we got them printed. The answer is On Demand Technologies, and we’ve had a great experience with them so far. Over the years we’ve had the opportunity to work with a variety of printers and while price is always important, I’ve determined that good service really determines whether I keep sending jobs to a printer or not. Our contact at ODT, Michelle, has been great from the start, and the quality of the cards is excellent.

For Durance, we printed 400 decks of cards with these specifications:

65 sheets (cards) of 2.5 x 3.5 111# white printed 4/4
low gloss UV coated on both sides
die cut corners, and banded as a set

The cost per unit was very reasonable, including the one-time set up fee. At the same time, we’d need to print at higher quantities to get a low enough cost to put the cards into distribution.

It’s worth noting that ODT also prints books and other materials, and can print cards in a variety of sizes and styles. My only disappointment has been that they don’t currently do tuck boxes or shrink-wrapping for decks of cards.

BPG Sales Numbers: Q3 2012

People have been asking us a lot about the “Wheaton Bump,” and what effect Fiasco being on Tabletop had. Here are the Q3 2012 sales numbers so you can see for yourself. In short, holy crap!

Product Title Sales Last Q Sales This Q Prior Ongoing * New Ongoing *
Fiasco  1291  4078  4320  8398
Companion  552  1481  1990  3471
Grey Ranks  12  14  77  91
Roach  49  39  209  248
Roach Returns  13  19  56  75
 Durance  0  770  0  770

* “Ongoing” refers to the total sales since the beginning of Q1 2011, when this reporting began.

Aside from nearly doubling our Lifetime sales numbers for Fiasco, one of the biggest effects of being on Tabletop was a sudden, new interest from traditional distribution companies. The ability to talk terms with these companies on even footing was very satisfying. Until this point we’d been working with IPR and DrivethruRPG for most of our direct sales and IPR and Alliance for wholesale distribution. Now we have arrangements with GTS, Lion Rampant (in Canada), and Esdevium (in the UK), as well as a handful of one-time purchases to meet the Tabletop demand.

Speaking of demand, we also saw a slight problem with supply this quarter. We expected the Tabletop release to come a bit later (closer to Gen Con) and had planned our print runs accordingly. When the show dropped earlier than that, we needed to scramble a bit to fill all the orders.

All of this was happening while we were also busy getting Durance finalized and out to the printers. The sales from that Kickstarter are also reflected in the “BPG” direct section.

Needless to say, we owe a huge thanks to Wil Wheaton for liking our game and featuring it on his show, as well as all as our mutual friends who put it on his table in the first place. Thanks also to all of you who are buying our games and helping us make fun things for you!

BPG Sales Numbers: Q2 2012

Posted by Steve on July 5th, 2012 — in Square Deal

Here are the Q2 2012 sales numbers for Bully Pulpit. We saw a dramatic upswing in sales this quarter, nearly doubling that of last quarter. We’ve had some great publicity lately, including a great show at PAX East (with lots of strong panel recommendations and demos), a thread of Reddit, and of course the talk about Fiasco being featured on Wil Wheaton’s new show Tabletop. Whatever the source, we appreciate the word-of-mouth and we’re very grateful to everyone who has picked up and played our games!

Also, the Durance Kickstarter just closed, and we’re very pleased with how well it did. We have a lot of work ahead of us! In any case, sales from that will be reflected in the Q3 report.
