I’m never sure when to break from reading the main text to read sidebars, especially if there aren’t natural places to stop on the same page as the sidebars. I also think, from D&D et al, many roleplayers are likely to consider sidebars to be optional.

It’s the 6×9″ format, I’m sure. The sidebars are too narrow; I think they unconsciously get read as noise or decoration. Or they are too hard to parse and people give up.
