Giving a New Meaning to Ouija-Board Play

Posted by Jason on December 14th, 2007 — in Check this out dude, Design

What if there was a game in which the characters had something they desperately needed to communicate to the players? As players we would have no idea what it was, at least initially, and the characters would have no way to directly contact us. Through play, the message would form gradually, like the moving planchette of a Ouija board. What would they tell us, and what would happen once we got the message?

This idea scares me a little, because I have no doubt that messages could be passed back and forth.

Grey Ranks Reviewed

C. W. Richeson gave Grey ranks a thorough and very positive review over at rpg.net. But even the most positive review can’t be perfect:

“My only gripe is that the book has an awful lot of white space. While initially the extensive sidebars cover this up, later on there are times where only half of the page is being used. Despite that flaw, there’s still plenty of material here.”

And that’s a minor thing, really, but it’s funny how hard we tried to prevent that appearance. The 6×9 format, with marginalia, is a beast to work with. We thought about abandoning marginalia at one point, but decided against it. As a result there are pages that are emptier than others. The alternative would have been to interrupt the flow with call-out boxes or something, and we didn’t want that.

Business Solutions Playtesting

I had a productive playtest yesterday and learned a lot, but even better, Seth Ben-Ezra and his Peoria group also had a playtest and recorded the whole thing. This is a really useful tool for analysis, let me tell you. I mixed it down into a five minute goof. Enjoy!

Fair Play

Just a reminder of what we stand for. Note the caveat at the end – fair play and a square deal stop at the border, so watch out!
