Why Grey Ranks?

Posted by Jason on June 22nd, 2007 — in Check this out dude, Design

I’m really excited about Grey Ranks. It’s been a particularly fruitful labor of love for me, and I think people are going to enjoy it. It can be a bit of a hard sell, though – the elevator pitch makes it sound like a vacation in Pyongyang: “You play child soldiers as your whole world is blown to pieces around you. In the end, your character will probably die.” So I’ve been thinking about how to communicate why somebody might like the game.

More Playtesters!

Posted by Jason on June 19th, 2007 — in Playtest

These guys are playing Grey Ranks currently and giving some great feedback, but didn’t make the to-press cutoff for the game. So they’re not in the credits, but they are in my heart:

Nathaniel Waisbrot, Chris Conley, Rob Books, and the notorious Travis Farber.

Many thanks, guys!

A Greg Jansen Production

I was chatting with our staff videographer, Greg Jansen, today, and realized that I had forgotten how frickin’ cool the Roach movie we made is.

Grey Ranks, In The Can

Posted by Jason on June 15th, 2007 — in Check this out dude, Design

As in done. We’re sending the files to Publisher’s Graphics today, all 142 pages of it. Everything goes a little slower than you anticipate - in our case, indexing took more effort than we thought. Then we changed the back cover blurb. That’s how it goes! We’re also preparing it as a Lulu book. We’ll eventually offer it that way as well as through traditional print/pdf channels via IPR, but right now Lulu’s a Gen Con fallback if there are issues with our new printer.

I’m so proud of this game! It’s crisp and beautiful, it plays great, it’s everything I had hoped it would be.

The Roach Returns: Cards

Posted by Jason on June 9th, 2007 — in Check this out dude, Design

Each of the two settings in The Roach Returns has eight custom cards. Here’s one from Darker:

And here’s one from Overlord:

Both settings are done, both are laid out, the cards are almost done (niggling technical issues, kerning, etc.), Darker needs a character sheet, the cover is done, this project is very close to coming together and going to the printer.
