Your idea clicks better for me evocatively and thematically than Bischoff's fantasies. It has an M. John Harrison quality to it that I like. Paul David Bischoff wrote a couple of science fantasies back in 1979/81 about a world in which mechanical fantasy creatures ruled the night: Nightworld, which I’ve read, and The Vampires of Nightworld, which I’ve not.
