What I Am Working On

I’ve had a bit of a lull, if you can call it that, waiting for The Shab-Al-Hiri Roach to show up. I’ve got a bunch of neat ideas but they are all at the point where I need to step back and re-assess. As part of that process, I think I’ll just lay them out here.

Baby Wars!

I mentioned my first real game design, Baby Wars, the other day – and had to go back and scan the ancient pages. This is a copy of the original, made I think in ninth grade to preserve my towering genius for all time. If you play it let me know! I remember making some tough choices about weapons, and developing effective strategies to take advantage of dirty diapers and babies who could move fast. I think I used the map that came with melee, but any hexagons will do. I like the fact that I included rules for shooting infants with assault rifles.

My Life As A Gamer

My dad was a wargamer – Panzerblitz, Mechwar ’77, Borodino, Tactics II, and so forth. My earliest, earliest gamer memory was being allowed to play alone in the basement while he and my Uncle Bill played a wargame there. I was probably five or six and the rule was “you can stay provided you are absolutely silent. Any noise at all and you are going upstairs”. It was excruciatingly difficult because I was basically a living noise at that point, but I managed.

And Now We Wait

My wife and I wrapped up card sorting andpacking yesterday – it wasn’t so bad. Now there is not much to do until the books arrive and we begin another round of packing. The site is getting whipped into shape and everything seems to be in order. I’ve got three or four games in various states of completion that I’m ready to knuckle down and work on again!

Steve, myself, and our lovely ladies spent three hours sorting, collating, and packaging cards. We got 35 sets out of 110 done. It’s hard work, but the end result will be a very attractive and nicely presented product.
