I’ve been mulling this idea over since I read Wisconsin Death Trip last December. Bear Lake is going to be a game about the life of a small town as told through the reprehensible deeds of its most prominent citizens.
If you get a chance please take a look at what I’ve linked to and give me some feedback. Even if it is “Get back to scanning Roach images!”…
(Update: the link now points to the revised 1.5 version)
I watched Lifeboat last night, and it needs to be added to the bibliography for Open Boat. Every character has an Issue, PTA style, and it makes me wonder whether Open Boat is currently too shallow - the only character interactions are those forced on players by mechanical desperation. It might be enough but maybe it could be better. Of course the meat of the game is player interaction, metagame wheeling and dealing, &c. Anyway, Tallulah Bankhead kicks ass.
I had a good talk with my brother about some potential Roach sequels today. The format is straightforward - find a heirarchical organization, add 6 Events, 9 characters, and tweak 12 Enthusiasms. Add new cards and you are good to go. I have lots of ideas and, since the system will be open and extensible, I hope Bully Pulpit can host contributions from other players eventually. One useful thing will be a set of “generic” cards - not tied to setting at all. Opportunities are usually to blame. “Earn Tenure” is pretty limiting.
OK, this is odd. I’m not exactly sure what’s going on here, but apparently somebody has picked up Howard Thompson’s lapsed trademark for The Fantasy Trip and “re-imagined” the rules, which are functionally identical but worded differently. Apparently this is all reasonably legal. I have a great fondness for the Fantasy Trip, so this is sort of good news, I guess. It’s a game I never really got a chance to play, but spent a lot of satisfying time preparing to play.
