New Fiasco Review on RPG Musings

Posted by Steve on April 15th, 2011 — in News

Fiasco just got a very generous review from The Opportunist over at RPG Musings.

As rules systems go, this one’s complex enough to handle the different variables a play group will encounter while being intuitive enough to let people just play the game. If there’s a game I’d ever recommend to get non-gamers into role-playing, this is really it.

Check out the full review for more, as well as a link in the comments to some actual play with the Los Angeles 1936 playset. Thanks Seamus!

Bully Pulpit Interview in Bull Spec Magazine

Bull Spec is a quarterly magazine of speculative fiction published in Durham, NC. Issue #5 just came out, and features an interview with Bully Pulpit Games by Samuel Montgomery-Blinn:

Bull Spec Issue #5 Cover
Each month of 2010 has seen your website feature a new playset for Fiasco… What does that say about the ruleset, when it can be used for such a wide variety of stories?

J It says it is a flexible, fun, replayable game! it handles different tones well, and part of the fun is being surprised by what direction a session heads. Crazy? Silly? Pitch black? Melacholy?

As long as the story involves really bad things happening to flawed people?

J Yes! Exactly. Powerful ambition must meet poor impulse control. But beyond that, all bets are off.

S I think it also says that most people are a lot more creative and well-versed in storytelling techniques than they realize. A big part of what Fiasco does is simply provide structure and pacing for a story and then give the players permission to aggressively contribute their ideas and enthusiasm. The playsets are hot coals, and the players are all piling on fuel to build the fire. A fire that ultimately burns down the town, of course.

April Playset of the Month – News Channel Six

Posted by Steve on April 1st, 2011 — in News

This month’s Playset of the Month, News Channel Six, is the product of long collaboration by Action Six News Team members Chris Norwood, Ken Coble, and Tom Gurganus.

Times are tough at Action Six News. We’re last place in an already small market and losing ground all the time. It’s not like much news-worthy stuff happens in this crappy little town anyway, and those bastards over at Action News Eleven always seem to be one step ahead of us! With advertising revenue drying up and people turning more and more to that blasted internet, sometimes you’ve got to get a little creative in reporting the news. The Action Six News team could be from any small city around the United States, filled with people who desperately seek notoriety, fame or– just occasionally– a better world.
